The Institute of Ecology (INECO) was founded by the National Ecological Centre of Ukraine in 1993.

Mission

To plan and carry out scientific research in the fields of ecology and environmental protection; to develop approaches to solving environmental problems in Ukraine; to plan and carry out nature-protection activities, environmental education and information dissemination.

Main objective

To unite scientists and involve an active part of society in solving fundamental and practical environmental problems as well as to ensure that citizens are able to participate directly in activities related to environmental protection and the rehabilitation of a healthy environment, promoting the sustainable development of Ukrainian society.

Main areas of activity

  • scientific and research activities;
  • scientific and practical activities, including the application of scientific achievements to practice (or production);
  • scientific support to public environmental organisations and movements;
  • environmental education;
  • publication of special scientific and educational literature on ecology, environmental protection and the problems of sustainable development;
  • creation of films on environmental and nature-protection topics.

The organisation's experience in the conservation of small rivers

1995-96: Developing a programme of scientifically based activities to restore optimal conditions in the basin of the River Zgar (an estuary of the Southern Bug River);

1995-97: Participation in the project, "Increasing public awareness and active participation in solving the environmental problems of the River Dnipro". Eight sub-projects were carried out within the framework of the project, with seven public organisations from various regions of Ukraine participating.

1996-97: Development of an action plan on conservation of the River Stugna.

1999-2000: Participation in the development of the Strategic Environmental Action Plan of the Ukrainian NGO Network on Conservation and Restoration of Rivers.

1999-2000: Implementation of the project, "The River Rostavytsya Valley - a classic landscape of Ukrainian cultural life for many centuries". The project was aimed at collecting and disseminating information on the river and the establishment of several public organisations to protect the river. A film, "Along the River Rostavytsya", was made.

2003: A training course for the representatives of different organisations - members of the URN, "Public Participation in the Conservation of Small Rivers", was prepared and undertaken (with the support of the Wetlands International Black Sea Programme).

In 2003, within the framework of the "Save your River" Small Grants Programme organised by the Wetland International Black Sea Programme, the project, "The Production of a Shadow List of Ramsar Sites along the Middle and Lower Dnipro", was supported.

The book will be of interest to anyone who wants to protect rivers. It includes methods for collecting field information on rivers, organising excursions and expeditions, ways of involving the public and collaborating with local authorities.

The River Stugna. Current State. Prospects for the Future. 1997. [In Ukrainian.] Institute of Ecology (INECO), The River Stugna Protection Committee, Kyiv. 52 pp.

 

The edition includes information of the ecology of the River Stugna, the river valley, its historical heritage and the plan of action to protect it. It gives information about the characteristic nature of the Dnipro region and the impact of agricultural activities on it. The problems of the protection of small rivers are highlighted in the book. The publication is aimed at representatives of local authorities (in particular, environmental authorities), teachers and members of "green" movements.
